Employee Orientation and Educational Programs

The EAP is always happy to come to a department to talk to staff about the services offered by the EAP.

An employee orientation provides employees with general information about the EAP’s scope of services and
components for assistance. Employee Orientation is most often presented to work groups during a regularly
scheduled staff meeting and takes approximately 5-10 minutes. This module can be expanded to incorporate basic
information about the causes of stress and stress management techniques.

Providing an orientation should strongly be considered when a manager knows a workgroup, or some individual staff,
may be experiencing workplace stress, changes or some other concern for which EAP can assist.

The EAP offers a variety of educational seminars and interventions to assist work groups. A sampling of our most popular training and intervention programs are:

Effective Communication

Stress Management

Dealing with Change

Cumulative Grief

Domestic Violence

Stress Management

Stress Management programs typically include identifying both work and personal causes of stress, a stress self-test
and relaxation techniques. The emphasis is on self-care and building stress resilience. Concrete and practical
strategies for understanding, coping with and reducing stress are discussed. Participants are given the opportunity to
share their own experiences and develop specific stress management plans.

Dealing with Change

This training is for workgroups undergoing or anticipating some major change in responsibilities in some aspect of
the job. The objective is to increase understanding of the impact of change.  The goal of this intervention is to enable
people to move forward through the change process. General information is presented on the stages of change, and
how change affects each person differently. The focus then moves to a discussion of what specific changes are
occurring, how they are impacting the participants and how best to handle the new challenges ahead.  With an
emphasis on self-care and mutual support, suggestions are made for effective ways to meet the challenge
of the workgroup’s particular change.

Cumulative Grief

The Cumulative Grief intervention is appropriate for workgroups that have had multiple losses, and offers
bereavement education, support and self-care strategies to employees. The first half of the program includes
didactic material on grief and loss, and time for the participants to process feelings related to loss. The second
half involves identifying ways to care for oneself and to cultivate workplace supports to cope with ongoing loss.

Effective Communication

This hour-long program looks at communication along a continuum (passive-assertive-aggressive), some of the
myths about communication and the three components of communication; speaking, listening and met messages.
The program also looks at Deborah Tannebaum’s interpretation of the differences between male and female communication.
This training includes a humorous look at the various styles of communication.  A role-play on communication is
also incorporated in the program.

Domestic Violence

Domestic Violence training outlines the definition, prevalence, and the impact of domestic violence on the employee
and the workplace. It also includes an overview of the assistance available through EAP, Police and Security, and
Human Resources. A description is provided of the in-house domestic violence intervention services, HAVEN (MGH)
and Passageway (BWH), and the specialized services of the EAP Domestic Violence Specialist.
